Adbuffs: Revolutionizing eCommerce Growth with Content-First Performance Marketing

Ramasish Bhowmik - Co-founder of Adbuffs

The Indian Direct-to-Consumer (D2C) market is exploding, but for many brands, the path to scale is blocked by a common hurdle: the gap between data-driven performance marketing and high-quality creative content. While many agencies specialize in either "the math" (running ads) or "the art" (creating content), few manage to bridge the two effectively. This is where Ramasish Bhowmik and his team at Adbuffs are making their mark.

Founded in July 2019, Adbuffs is an eCommerce growth agency that has scaled from a two-person freelance operation to a powerhouse of 100+ teammates. By treating their clients' businesses as their own and bringing entire content production in-house, they are proving that a holistic, content-first approach is the secret to winning the attention economy in India.

The Content Gap in Indian eCommerce

Before launching Adbuffs, Ramasish and his co-founder were successful freelancers catering primarily to clients in the UK and US. However, they identified a massive untapped opportunity in their home market. "We figured out a very big gap in the content region in the Indian market," Ramasish recalls. "That's where we wanted to jump in and cater to."

Traditional Indian agencies were often platform-specific—specializing strictly in Facebook or Google ads. But the modern D2C consumer doesn't care about algorithms; they care about the experience. Adbuffs decided to move beyond being "platform experts" to being "holistic marketers."

The Adbuffs Edge

  • In-House Production: Full-scale video shoots, photo shoots, and creative design managed internally.
  • Platform Versatility: Expertise across Facebook, Instagram, Google, Amazon, and YouTube.
  • Retention Focus: Leveraging Email and WhatsApp marketing to maximize customer lifetime value.
  • Holistic Training: Every teammate is trained to be a "marketer" first, not just an ad manager.

Navigating the Data Privacy Era

With recent global shifts in data privacy and algorithm changes (like iOS 14 updates), many ad agencies struggled as traditional tracking became less effective. Ramasish views this not as a catastrophe, but as a return to marketing fundamentals.

"The entire skeleton of marketing has never changed and will never change in the future," he asserts. "The only thing that has changed is how we are reading the data. As long as the product's goal and the consumer's mind are aligned, algorithm changes don't affect the end goal: creating good content that breaks the clutter."

The Founder's Journey: From Indoor Plants to Growth Marketing

Ramasish’s path to growth marketing was a series of pivots. An engineer by training with an MBA, he initially co-founded an indoor plant eCommerce business called Life Pods. While the business struggled due to high investment costs, it taught him a critical lesson: he could handle digital marketing himself without external help.

When the plant business failed, he turned to freelancing to sustain himself. "I was very alone while I was freelancing... there was no one to share my joys and sorrows," he shares. Meeting his co-founder in a Kolkata-based group was the spark that led to the birth of Adbuffs in 2019.

"If you are confident of your services, you should charge higher. We used to hold back ourselves, fearing the client may go. But if you have proper testimonials and you talk confidently, there is no reason to charge low."

Critical Lessons for Agency Founders

Building a 100-person team in just over three years brought its share of "blunders" and breakthroughs. Ramasish candidly shares three key mistakes every service entrepreneur should avoid:

3 Common Agency Blunders

  1. Skipping Background Checks: Initial hiring was often done on gut feeling. "We thought it was a petty matter, but background verification is a very important part of hiring."
  2. Underpricing Services: Beginners often charge low out of desperation. Confidence in quality should reflect in the invoice.
  3. Underestimating Growth: Taking a smaller office space (2,000 sq ft) to "minimize risk" backfired when the team expanded rapidly, leaving them "in a soup" for space.

The Meaning of Entrepreneurship

For Ramasish, entrepreneurship isn't defined by having a business card or a fancy office. It’s a mindset. "A person doing a job can also be an entrepreneur. It is to love what you are doing and not gripping about it every day."

Success, in his view, is the ability to go to sleep peacefully knowing you are moving in a steady upward line. At Adbuffs, that upward line is built on human connection. "It's about building personal human connection—being a friend or a brother to them. Life is a part of work, and work is a part of life. We shouldn't be creating differences between the two."
