EcoRight: Udit Sood on Making Eco-Friendly Fun and Scaling a Sustainable Consumer Brand

Udit Sood - Founder of EcoRight

Going eco-friendly is often seen as a sacrifice—a choice between aesthetics and ethics. Udit Sood, the Founder of EcoRight, is proving that it doesn't have to be. By creating affordable, appealing, and high-utility bags made from natural materials, EcoRight is making sustainability "fun." With a background spanning HUL, Zomato, and an MBA from IIM Calcutta, Udit has combined corporate rigor with an entrepreneurial legacy to build a brand that is now a global favorite on Amazon.

Udit's transition into entrepreneurship was almost inevitable. "I come from a family of entrepreneurs," he shares. "My grandfather was from the first batch of IIM Ahmedabad, and my father is an IIT Bombay alumnus who has been running his own business for 30 years. Conversations on the dinner table were never about routine; they were about new problems, challenges, and achievements." Despite the prestigious corporate roles, Udit found his greatest satisfaction in the high-responsibility environment of Zomato, which eventually gave him the confidence to leap into his own venture in 2017.

The Problem with 'Boring' Eco-Products

EcoRight was born from a gap in the market. "A lot of brands were doing eco-friendly products, but they were either too expensive or just plain unappealing," Udit explains. "We wanted to create products that people would carry because they're great products first, and eco-friendly second. If you appeal to a consumer's aesthetics, the transition to sustainability becomes effortless."

Scaling Globally from Day One

Unlike many tech startups that spend months building a product before monetization, EcoRight focused on revenue from the start. "Being in the consumer goods space allowed us to see money coming in from Day 1," Udit notes. Leveraging Ahmedabad's manufacturing facilities, the team quickly prototyped designs and decided on a bold launch strategy: going live on Amazon India and Amazon US simultaneously.

"Within a month, we had hundreds of feedbacks from both Indian and American consumers," Udit recalls. "That feedback loop was crucial. We launch, monitor, and iterate. It's how we've managed to maintain very high ratings across global markets including the UK, Europe, Australia, and Canada."

The 'Full Life' Job

Udit is refreshingly candid about the reality of running a business. For him, entrepreneurship isn't a nine-to-five; it's a "full life job." "You don't tune off at 8:00 PM. You might be watching TV, but the laptop is open, and you're replying to an urgent customer mail. But I look at it as a pro—I'm lucky to have found something I'm passionate enough to give my entire life to."

This passion extends to his team of nine, which includes his wife and co-founder, Nikita. They hire primarily based on value alignment. "We look for youngsters who actually care for the environment. If the intent is there, anyone can learn the skills. But if they don't share the mission, they won't thrive in a setup like ours."

Udit's Playbook for Consumer Founders

  1. Find Your Energy: Don't start a business just because you hate your job. Start something that solves a problem you are truly passionate about solving every morning.
  2. Build Financial Stability: Entrepreneurship involves a high degree of risk and luck. Having a bit of financial security allows you to take those risks with a clearer head.
  3. Leverage Feedback Loops: Don't wait for perfection. Launch on platforms like Amazon where you can get immediate consumer insights and iterate your product in real-time.
  4. Solve India's Problems: India is a place with a billion problems, and each one is an opportunity. Solving environmental or social issues is personally far more rewarding than just building a utility.
"India is the greatest place in the world right now to build something. We need more entrepreneurs out there solving real problems. If you have an idea, work on it relentlessly—the reward of making a difference is infinite." — Udit Sood

A Vision for a Cleaner Future

Looking ahead, Udit envisions a world where environmental disasters are a thing of the past. While EcoRight is a small part of the solution, he believes that driving the feeling of "going eco-friendly" in each individual is the first step toward real change. For Udit, EcoRight isn't just about bags; it's about proving that ethical, honest, and sustainable business is not only possible but globally scalable.
