id8 media solutions: Tanya Swetta on Revolutionizing Integrated Marketing for Global Brands

Tanya Swetta - Founder of id8 media solutions

In 2001, at a time when digital marketing was a distant future and public relations was a standalone tool, Tanya Swetta launched id8 media solutions from her bedroom with nothing but a computer and an unyielding optimism. Twenty years later, that bedroom startup has evolved into a global powerhouse headquartered in Mumbai with a thriving office in New York. By pioneering the Integrated Marketing Communications (IMC) model in India, Tanya has helped over 800 brands—from early-stage startups to Fortune 500 giants—find their voice in an increasingly cluttered digital world.

Tanya’s journey is a masterclass in sustainability and adaptability. On the ELI Podcast, she shares how she transitioned from a psychology graduate to an "integrated marketing manager" in her own firm, the influence of her entrepreneur mother, and the core values that have kept id8 bootstrapped and profitable for two decades.

What is Integrated Marketing (IMC)?

IMC is the seamless coordination of three critical communication spectrums:

  • Content & Visuals: Combining written narratives with visual perception to ensure a brand's message is imbibed, not just seen.
  • Digital Distribution: Utilizing websites, SEO, social media, and performance marketing to ensure content reaches the right stakeholders.
  • PR & Collaborations: Using public relations and influencer marketing to build credibility and speak to multiple stakeholder groups simultaneously.

The Seed of Entrepreneurship: Age 16

Tanya credits her work ethic to her mother, an entrepreneur who raised her after her father passed away when she was young. "I started working from the age of 16 in my mother's travel agency," Tanya recalls. "I had to earn my own money right from the start." This early exposure gave her the "entrepreneurial spark" that many founders spend years trying to find.

After graduating in Psychology and Philosophy, Tanya realized her passion lay in communications. She burned the candle at both ends working 18-hour days at a PR agency before reaching a point of burnout. It was during this break that a massive opportunity arrived: a mandate for one of India's largest hospitality chains. This first client became the foundation of id8, and through sheer quality of work and word-of-mouth, Tanya grew her roster from one to ten clients in just two months.

Building a Global "Team of Experts"

Today, id8 media solutions boasts a team of 80+ experts across India and the US. Tanya’s approach to hiring is rooted in Values and Cultural Fit. "Integrity, providing a quality solution, and being honest about your work—if you have these, half the battle is won," she says.

The id8 Talent Philosophy

  • Organic Growth: Many of the current Vice Presidents at id8 started as interns and climbed the ladder over 7–8 years.
  • Flat Hierarchy: Tanya maintains a flat structure to kindle the entrepreneurial spirit within every team member.
  • Hybrid Expertise: Teams are built with a mix of homegrown talent and specialists from tech giants like Google and Amazon.
  • Integrity as a Filter: Those who don't align with the company’s qualitative and integral ethos "naturally fall out of the system."

Navigating Challenges from Recession to Pandemic

Over 20 years, Tanya has faced every type of challenge imaginable—from not having an office space in the early days to navigating the 2009 recession and the recent pandemic. "A challenge for me is always an opportunity," she notes. Her optimism has allowed id8 to remain entirely self-funded, a rare feat in an industry often dominated by VC-backed firms.

Expanding to New York was a strategic move to bring the innovation of an evolved market back to India. "The idea is to bring the learning from the US to enhance the way Indian brands look at their marketing," she explains. This cross-pollination of ideas ensures that id8 remains at the cutting edge of global marketing trends.

"Entrepreneurship is a commitment that isn't driven by the day of the week or the time of day. You have to be your own biggest believer and constantly strive for new visions and successes."

The Disciplined Entrepreneur

How does a CEO manage two kids, a family, and a global agency across two time zones? For Tanya, the answer is Structure and Google Calendar. "My calendar is all blues, reds, greens, and yellows—everything is color-coded and planned in advance."

She wakes up at 4:30 AM every day to bridge the gap between Indian and US operations. Despite the intensity, she insists on weekends off. "As entrepreneurs, we must remember that you have to take time out to recharge."

Founder Lessons for Scaling

  • Never Stop Striving: When you reach the top, don't forget there is someone right behind you. Keep moving toward the next success.
  • Avoid Over-Leveraging: Have a three-year goal and make projections based on the current volatile economic environment.
  • Nurture Every Relationship: From the watchman of your building to a Fortune 500 CEO, every relationship is a seed that might hold you in good stead in the future.

A Legacy of Mentorship

Reflecting on her journey, Tanya notes that she never had a mentor. In a generous offer to the ELI community, she has made herself available to advice any aspiring entrepreneur. "If there is anyone who would like some advice, I am happy to do that," she concludes. With id8 media solutions, Tanya Swetta isn't just building an agency; she is building a legacy of integrated, ethical, and global communication.
